I am launching a new peer-reviewed medical journal and need a complete, production-ready website. The build should mirror the structure of established journals: a clean top-level menu linking to our mission statement, editorial board, ethics and AI policies, author guidelines, and similar reference pages. Those pages can remain largely static, while articles, issues, and user data will be dynamic and searchable. Article workflow • Authors must be able to register, upload manuscripts (PDF, DOCX), and receive an automatic email acknowledging receipt. • On my side, I need an admin panel to assign reviewers, track revisions, and flag papers for publication. A simple, intuitive dashboard is essential. Access control Most articles will remain open access, but certain premium sections and downloadable material should sit behind a subscriber login. Please implement role-based access so we can differentiate between editors, reviewers, subscribers, and casual visitors. Payments The site has to collect two kinds of fees: 1. Article processing charges for accepted papers. 2. Individual or institutional subscriptions. Please integrate Credit/Debit Cards, PayPal, and Bank Transfer options and tie successful payment to automatic access activation. Technology I have not fixed the CMS; WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla are all acceptable if you can demonstrate reliability, security, and an upgrade path. Whichever you choose, build with standard medical-journal conventions—meaning a mix of static informational pages and a database-driven article repository. Deliverables • Fully configured CMS with the pages and workflows above • Responsive design matching current journal aesthetics (I can supply examples) • Payment gateway setup and tested for the three methods listed • Email templates for submission acknowledgement and payment confirmation • Documentation so my editorial team can manage future issues without coding Please outline your recommended platform, any plugins or modules you’ll rely on (e.g., OJS integrations, WooCommerce, Drupal Commerce, etc.), and a realistic timeline for initial launch and acceptance testing.

1️⃣ Do you want to use an existing journal management system (such as an editorial workflow plugin/module) or should the submission, peer-review, and publication workflow be custom-built within the CMS—and how closely must it mirror traditional academic journal processes (revision rounds, reviewer anonymity, decision logs)? 2️⃣ For payments and access control, should article processing charges and subscriptions be fully automated with role assignment (author/reviewer/subscriber) upon payment, or will there be a manual approval step for institutional subscriptions and accepted papers? Let’s chat and have a discussion, and prepare the project scope so that both of us are on the same page Regards, Rupam

Hello, Thank you for the detailed requirements — this is a well-structured and exciting project. For a peer-reviewed medical journal, I recommend Open Journal Systems (OJS) as the core platform. It’s built specifically for academic publishing and already supports manuscript submission, reviewer assignment, revision tracking, role-based access (editor, reviewer, author, subscriber), and issue management. We can integrate secure payments (Cards, PayPal, Bank Transfer) for APCs and subscriptions, along with automated email notifications. This approach ensures reliability, security, and long-term scalability while following standard medical journal conventions. I’m confident we can deliver a professional, fully operational journal platform ready for publication. Let’s move forward.Thanks.

Hi, I recommend WordPress with OJS integration or a structured WP + custom post types + WooCommerce stack for APCs/subscriptions, role-based access, reviewer workflows, and automated emails. I’ll build dynamic issue archives, secure manuscript uploads, and payment-triggered access activation (Stripe/PayPal/Bank). Fully responsive, documented, scalable. Do you prefer WordPress-native flexibility long term? Let's discuss in chat to proceed further.

Hi, This is Elias from Miami. I reviewed your scope and I understand you need a production-ready journal website that feels like a real peer-reviewed publication: clean top nav for static policy pages (mission, editorial board, ethics + AI policy, author guidelines), plus a database-driven article/issue repository that’s searchable and easy to manage. On the workflow side: author registration + manuscript upload (PDF/DOCX) with automatic acknowledgement email, and an admin dashboard to assign reviewers, track revisions, and flag papers for publication. Access control needs roles (editor/reviewer/subscriber/visitor) with mostly open access, but premium sections + downloads behind subscriber login. Payments must support APCs (for accepted papers) + subscriptions (individual/institutional) with cards, PayPal, and bank transfer, and automatic access activation after successful payment. Q1: Do you want the full peer-review loop inside the site (reviewer uploads comments/files, revision rounds), or is “assign + track status” enough for MVP? Q2: For bank transfers, should access activate only after manual admin confirmation (recommended), or do you have an automated bank feed/provider? Q3: Institutional subscriptions: do you need IP-range access (campus/library style) or just multi-user accounts under one institution? Regards.

Hi, We’ve developed a similar platform called Concio, where experts can create profiles and share knowledge through Q&A and articles. We also built a custom WordPress plugin for managing expert profiles and integrating with Zoom for live sessions. For your project, I recommend using WordPress with a custom theme and plugins to ensure a lightweight, fast, and secure solution. We can also integrate with WooCommerce for payments, which allows us to use existing payment gateways and manage subscriptions effectively. Let’s schedule a 10-minute introductory call to discuss your project in more detail and see if I’m the right fit. I usually respond within 10 minutes. I’m eager to learn more about your exciting project. Best regards, Adil

This is a well-thought-out brief. Given the full requirements, I would strongly recommend Open Journal Systems (OJS) over WordPress or Drupal for this. OJS is specifically designed for peer-reviewed academic journals, and it handles almost everything you described out of the box - submission workflow, reviewer assignment, revision tracking, role-based access (editor/reviewer/subscriber/author), and issue/volume management. It also has existing plugins for PayPal and payment gateways. Here is how I would approach this: - Deploy OJS on a VPS, configure the database and mail settings - Customize the journal theme to match your branding (clean, professional, journal-style) - Set up all the static pages (mission, editorial board, ethics/AI policies, author guidelines) with your content - Configure submission workflows, notification emails, and reviewer queues - Integrate payment for article processing charges and subscriptions - Set up role permissions (editors, reviewers, subscribers, public visitors) - Provide documentation for your editorial team OJS is open-source, PHP-based, and maintained by PKP (Public Knowledge Project) - it is the standard platform used by thousands of journals globally, so your team will find resources and support easily. I can share examples of OJS journal setups I have worked on. Happy to discuss the timeline - a clean 3-week build is realistic for initial launch. - Usama

For a medical journal website needing a clear mix of static and dynamic content, I recommend WordPress for its flexibility and strong plugin ecosystem. Using the OJS (Open Journal Systems) plugin or an editorial workflow plugin like Edit Flow will handle submissions, reviews, and editorial tracking efficiently. WooCommerce combined with WooCommerce Subscriptions can manage payments and access control smoothly, covering article fees and subscriptions. I’ll structure the menu with static pages for mission, editorial board, policies, and author guidelines as requested. The article repository will be searchable and dynamic, with role-based access controlling open, subscriber, editor, and reviewer views. Automated emails for submission and payment can be configured through WooCommerce and WP’s email templates. For payment gateways, I will integrate Stripe (Credit/Debit cards), PayPal, and a manual option for bank transfers tied to access activation. Some questions to clarify: 1. Do you require manuscript review comments and decisions to be visible to authors in the system? 2. Will the premium sections be per-article or general subscription access? Based on similar builds, I expect to have an initial demo ready in 3 weeks, with full launch and testing within 5. I’m ready to start building a secure, user-friendly journal site that makes managing submissions and subscriptions straightforward.
