Think of an expository essay as exposing an image/issue. Before digital cameras, film negatives were exposed to different chemicals in a dark room and dried before the picture appeared clear and crisp. You never knew if your shot would turn into a good picture until the film was a developed. You could have scouted the perfect location, chosen the right outfit, and shot under the right conditions; but, bad lighting or a wrong angle could ruin a full roll of pictures and you’d never know it until it was too late.
Similarly, the way you compose your essay will require you to explore your thoughts about your issue as though scouting a location for a photo shoot, try out different word choices as though they were lighting used to cast a certain mood, and find your voice that makes you uniquely you—just like some of the most famous photographers can be identified by their portfolio.
Expository Essay Process:
1. Think: How many ways can I approach the issue I’m exploring? Which has the most impact? What do I need to learn more about in order to provide a factual account?
2. Shoot: Where is the exact moment to begin? What specific word choices (diction) can you include in order to capture the essence of the issue at hand? How do you contrast the issue/image with another to bring your point into focus?
3. Develop: Think of your voice as an IG filter. What’s your signature? What structure, focus, or perspective can you take to make this uniquely yours?
4. Reshoot: Revising your essay is keeping the parts that are working and deleting the parts that didn’t gel. What information is missing? Which part of the process needs more work?
Think of an expose in the news as an investigation with facts, but with a human side to the case. The biggest headlines always have a picture to go along with the story. Your investigation of the issue needs to be from a unique perspective that can’t be found in other newspapers.
