To add functionality to an existing application to assess the behaviour of end-users regarding their printing habits we're looking for an easy way to read page-counter and brand/type information on networked printers from any brand. This information is usually referred to as the printer's MIB. Using the SNMP protocol is usually the easiest way to go. Project can be standalone script/application running on a networked MS Windows PC. Hostnames and/or IP ranges should be possible to be recovered from network neighbourhood or can be suplied by customer. Output of the tool can be XML or CSV which will then be uploaded into a MySQL db. Issues needed to be taken care of are the possible existance of multiple counters per printer (colour, black&white, A3- A4 format etc.) and printers "behind" printserver boxes like JetDirect boxes. Other possibilities lie in the available web-pages being generated from within the printer to access this info (not using the SNMP propotcol), but info will have to be parsed to filter page counter info out. We're also inerested in the other info that can be made available, but at this stage the page-counter and brand/type info is enough. More details can be provided.
