Before there was Google Maps, before there was Mapquest, Before Bing or Yahoo maps, there was me. My freetopo/topowest site paved the way for them all, and to this day is unmatched in image quality. This is a plot of my Garmin GPS as I carried it in my single scull in the annual "Head of the Foster City Lagoon" rowing race. The map it is plotted on is the product of my C code, and is an artifact from my website, topowest, which from 99 thru 06 rendered 2K maps/day of the finest quality ever seen on the web. If you look carefully you can see not only where I docked and took out, but also where I tangled oars with a high school freshmen women's eight - the most dangerous thing on any race course - ending my hopes for a spot on the podium. :-/ Google topowest and select the first link - and then go to terraserver and get a topo of Foster City, CA - and compare it to this one - to see evidence of my claims.
