I have been marketing professional services in the A/E/C (architecture, engineering and construction) industry for fifteen years. Throughout my career, I have been a very active member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) where I served as a Board Member for the New York Area Chapter for three years; this involvement provided me the opportunity to interact with various clients and other industry experts as well as allow me to learn about industry trends. My duties on a day-today basis have been quite diverse throughout the years. To summarize and present a general overview of my experience, I refer to the six domains of practice that are outlined by the SMPS to give a general overview of my knowledge and capabilities. Some of these duties were performed on the job and others were done as part of my involvement with SMPS. • Domain 1 – Marketing Research - Reviewing client websites, trade publications, local periodicals and capital improvement plans concerning upcoming and existing projects; monitoring sources of industry-related market information; and developing and maintaining a network of contacts consisting of corporate, industry, government, municipal, and community representative to keep abreast of industry, client, and competitor activity. • Domain 2 – Marketing Plan - Preparing a SWOT analysis of firm and personnel; and assist in creating a marketing plan which includes specific goals, objectives, strategies, action plans, and schedules for each target market. • Domain 3 – Client & Business Development - Screening and classifying prospects though various methods such as referrals, networking and cold calls; evaluating and implementing the utilization of contact management programs and databases; fostering/building client relations; and initiating/maintaining ongoing contact with prospective clients and consultants to build a professional relationship and pursue project opportunities. • Domain 4 – SOQs/RFPs/Proposals - Reviewing RFQ/RFP criteria and decision/selection process; setting up scheduling and tracking systems for individual proposal elements and status; managing activities of specialized consultants; and leading the presentation preparation effort consisting of various activities including coaching the participants, attending the rehearsals, and confirming that issues/requirements have been addressed. • Domain 5 – Promotional Activity - Preparing and publishing newsletters for hard copy and online distribution; distributing press releases; coordinating direct mail campaigns; writing, editing and updating copy for project descriptions, brochures, websites and other collateral materials; and developing a press list that includes media contacts that are relevant to the area and industry. • Domain 6 – Information, Resource and Organizational Management - Coordinating marketing efforts and providing a communications link across departments, disciplines, and/or branch offices; assist in developing and maintaining systems to extract, categorize, and retrieve information related to consultants, personnel, projects, prior proposals, boilerplate, visuals, mailing lists, and promotional items; executing and maintaining an internal communications program to facilitate information sharing within the firm; and attending professional development activities.
