What I have done when I was in the Military was to be responsible for the entire motor pool inventory of parts. I will outline my responsibilities and what I accomplished in the military for both branches that I served in. UNITED STATES COAST GUARD1989-1993 Was assigned to the united states Coast Guard Cutter Morgenthau assignment engineering section Was responsible for the maintenance of all working engines, evaporators, boilers, air conditioners, and refrigeration units aboard the ship. Another of the duties was to keep track of all the parts in the inventory, had to come up with a database system that met the guidelines of K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid) This was a great slogan because if it was simple it meant that it became easy to have order in the parts inventory. When I arrived to the unit back n 1989 they were using logs on a clipboard which was not really working due to 87% of the parts being taken out for maintenance were not getting logged in, so I came up with a simple database system which was formatted to https which was a private server within the ship. Due to the fact that the web pages were still new at this time it was a lot of calling around to get information but what was eventually done was a main web page log in system which only the supply engineers had access to, this was to limit the chances of errors in the inventory. The front site only had 4 pages the log in page, the out bound parts page which when the part number was inputted into the form and the submit button hit would automatically deduct the number from what was in inventory. This was an easy way to ensure that the number we had in inventory was matched. True it wasn’t really 100 percent because of the old sea dogs, but the number of parts being taken out without any of the supply engineers knowing to log it in the computer drastically reduced to only 15%. While in the coast Guard it became necessary to create an informational database management system using the B.O.S.S (Boat Outfit Service Systems) Manual. What I was in charge of doing was to create an informational database system, or an easy reference system to cross reference part numbers with NSN (National Stock numbers) What I decided to do was to input all the numbers that this particular unit used all the time for the boats that we had and put them on a spread sheet with the capability of an https page to enter a stock number or a part number and it would take you to a page that would allow you not only to cross reference but would give you the part information. This was done through a lot of trial and error because as this particular station was under a command that was changing we had to change the system to match the new commanders wishes. So I got a lot of inside the database management for those 3 years too Army reserve 1996-2011 This was the longest experience in not only database management but it was a lot of networking skills developed. When I re-enlisted I went to the Army Reserve instead due to the fact that the nearest Coast guard reserve station was over 50 miles away from where I was living. My duties did not change, but there was a database system already in place at this unit so I was basically just in charge of updating the system, so I again found the simple solution of using https system this way it would automatically add the parts to the spreadsheet, or take it away from the spreadsheet. Due to the database system already in place I really only had to write the https. When the new Officers came in I was responsible for the networking of the system into their office and creating a user name and password for them. The entire system was revamped in the year 1999. The US Military knew that the motherboards of old would not go to the year 2000 so we had to not only rebuild the computers, but we had to convert the databases to office 2000 and to some degree we almost had to reinvent the wheel because at first it was not taken so I used a back up zip disk of the database and restored that which we were lucky it worked. Either way it would have been my job to create it all over again because being in engineering is not only maintenance but it is inventory. designing sites and networks for over 15 years
