The career choice of this generation
The final decade of the 21st century witnessed a dramatic transformation of the Indian economy. So much so that the service sector not only soared to the top with 52.4 percent but contributed more to the national income than agriculture (25.5 per cent) and industry (just 22.1 per cent) - combined! In fact, the economy grew by 6 percent mainly on the strength of the services’ growth of 8 percent. With a workforce exceeding 50 per cent, services are now also ahead of agriculture, the traditional bedrock of employment.
At the root is the explosion in information technology (IT). Already earning more than Rs. 27,500 crore, the industry is expected to top Rs.4,00,000 crore just eight years hence, when it is expected to provide a livelihood to upwards of 70 lakh citizens of India. Around this hub will spiral the whole range of services ranging from software and telecommunications to entertainment and finance.
Recognising such phenomenal potential, IT task forces at the central and state levels are geared to make India a software superpower by 2008 with software exports touching US$ 50 billion and the domestic software industry accounting for US$ 35 billion. Already, over 70 percent of the country’s more than US$ 6 billion software services are being exported.
Add the prospectus of the US alone soon requiring six million system analysts and 19 million other computer professionals, and it is not surprising that engineers and professionals from other disciplines are swarming to the IT field – of which computer education provides the foundation for the future.
