As a freelance writer/editor, Jan has had over 20 years' experience in business, technical, and creative writing. Beginning in 1990, she owned and operated an editorial and word processing service, specializing in resume preparation, manuscript editing and critiquing for authors, and report preparation services for businesses. Previously, Jan had a career in the management and conservation of natural resources. She worked for the U.S.D.A. Forest Service for 12 years, specializing in wildlife biology and wilderness management. In 1987, she became the District Ranger on the Wilderness District of the Gila National Forest, becoming the first woman to hold that position with the Forest Service in New Mexico. Jan earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa.
