NASA Contest: Design a “Smart” Attachment Mechanism

Ringkasan Peraduan

Design a “Smart” Attachment Mechanism (no positioning capability) (SAM)

In this challenge, you are asked to design a “Smart” Attachment Mechanism (SAM) that will be mounted to the free end of a separately designed robotic arm. The SAM receives all external power and high-level commands through its interface to the robotic arm, but implements the below functions autonomously.

How it works: Initially, the SAM will be packed in a stowed configuration. Once activated, the SAM must be capable of autonomously performing five high-level actions:
1) unpack itself in preparation for placement near a Handrail,
2) close on the Handrail,
3) maintain a hold on the handrail for an extended period of time,
4) release from the handrail, and
5) pack back into the initial stowed configuration.

Click on the attachments below to see
1) the SAM Problem Description, which provides more detailed instructions about all the requirements your design needs to meet;
2) SAM Solution Guidelines, which details the format an content that your submission must follow; and
3) the templates that are referenced in the solution guidelines. Microsoft Excel and Open Office Calc formats are attached below.

Challenge rules:
The prize will be awarded for the lowest mass, technically feasible solution, submitted by the contest deadline.
No working prototype is required for submission, but the design must be sufficiently detailed to allow experts to assess the feasibility of your design (i.e., comply with all requirements) and the credibility of your mass estimate.
Only complete submission packages will be evaluated (see attachments).

NASA may select multiple winners or provide additional prize compensation on entries that are particularly novel or innovative.

NASA will be available to respond to clarifying questions, but feedback on quality is otherwise limited.
All complete submissions will be confirmed with 3-star ratings.
Note that final judgement of quality and winners will only happen after the submission deadline.

Hello, due to some issues i cant deliver a whole project (the kinematics) but i have the design of it,can this be considered ?

Designs must be complete per the submission guidelines (attached to the contest description page). We recommend that you try and complete as much of the required work as possible and submit what you have. Just be aware that there are minimum requirements that must be met in order for the submission to be evaluated and eligible for award.

The design by idea met all requirements, but right now i cant confirm it by kinematics,i cant deliver it like this but i can use it for the spam. Great contest though, thank you !

Only 2 hours remain for this contest. Please make sure and read the submission guidelines and include all of the required items. Many people are leaving off the Exit Survey code which is required for your submission to be eligible for evaluation and award. We recommend not waiting until the last minutes before the deadline to upload your submission. Submissions that are late (or can't be submitted) due to upload errors or site issues will not considered.

Hello, in AM description document section 3.2 table 1, force sensor energy cost is given as .375 W hr. Current information is unknown. Can this value be used for power profile? Or can you provide more info. Thank you

R2.3 normal operating load moment on handrail of 3.5Nm about y axis. Is it from the interface plate Geometric center? If so that means on handrail(at distance 58.66mm) a force of about 6 kg would be applied in Z direction on handrail . It seems too much. Is the 3.5Nm value correct?

      • 5 tahun yang lalu

Yep, there is a graphic showing the load and its orientation relative to the Interface Plate Geometric Center. The 3.5 Nm number of the load is based on potential astronaut loading scenarios and is correct.

Just to clarify, to save time in my end, since the system layout minimum requirement is not indicated. Since I use a combination of electrical, electronic and mechanical. Is it ok to ONLY use the block diagram for the system layout (not to include the mechanical exploded view and the circuit diagram). Thank you.

My apologies, it is indicated in the guidelines that if I represent a combination of electrical and mechanical, the system layout should be presented by a block diagram. I apologize for overlooking this.

Hello, I just would like to clarify a quality issue. I am currently using a DSub part, and the shielding of the connector extended 0.735 mm from the base when packed. Meaning the shielding is already outside the accepted dynamic volume. I could not move the connector upward for it will misalign with the given connector mate. Though it is a part, I could negative extrude the 3D to remove the excess, but the part won't exist anymore in the market. Please advise.

      • 5 tahun yang lalu

It is acceptable for the shielding of the standard DSUB (the outside trapezoidal shape) as well as the pins to go outside the permissible range such that they can connect with the interface plate, but for this part only. This was overlooked in the formulation of the problem.

Anyway, I already edited the 3D of the DSub connector. The exceeding part was not the trapezoidal shape, but the flat part that extends. Trapezoidal shape and pins was retained to remain at standard.

Just to clarify, Pin 1 is ground, Pin 4 is Bus voltage, serial command using the 3rd and 2nd pins. If only 4 pins are used, does this mean that I should create my own circuit board that connects to my active components to control and receive feedback from it, while interfaced with a male D-Sub to connect with the interface plate? There are no other pins available where I could connect active components, and it is only controlled via serial connection by 2 pins.

You should design whatever components are required for your SAM design that allows it to use power and serial data through the four provided pins in that DSUB female interface.

You should create whatever you need to interpret those serial commands passed through the D-Sub Connector in the interface plate to transform the commands into motion.

Hello NASA, What exactly does "smart" mean in the context of these projects? Some of the contests are listed as "no smarts", so what exactly does it mean?

    • 5 tahun yang lalu
    1. nasacoeci

      • 5 tahun yang lalu

In the context of these projects, "smart" means that that your solution will have to interpret serial commands and react accordingly.
