I need a new innovative name for our foundation and need your help.

This is our pitch:
No one chooses to have cancer

No one chooses to be ill, but you can choose the best possible drug treatment

No one chooses to have cancer. No one chooses to have cystic fibrosis. No one chooses to have gastrointestinal disease. And no one chooses to have rheumatism. No one chooses to be ill, but we can choose the best possible drug treatment. Or at least, you should be able to. Unfortunately, the reality in the Netherlands is different – very different in fact.

A matter of time

Medical expenses increase every year – a trend that shows no sign of abating.

Based on the price of the drugs offered by the pharmaceutical companies, the health insurers decide the availability and coverage. The health insurers decide which drugs should be available to you and which should not. As a consequence, the drug treatment you might really need may no longer be covered by your health insurance plan and too expensive to pay for by yourself.

In other words, it is simply a matter of time before hardly anyone can afford the drugs they need, let alone choose the best possible option.

Make a difference

We would like to change this rather grim future, because we can and because we believe we should. In fact, please allow us to introduce ourselves: Gino Ciotti, a doctor and idealist, and Huy Nguyen, a pharmacist who strives for righteousness.

We can make a difference in a number of ways. We are fighting high profit margins on drugs. We procure drugs cheaply and sell them for a fair price to pharmacies, hospitals and insurers. Moreover, a portion of our profits is reinvested in healthcare, particularly in medical research. In addition, we are working with Erasmus University Rotterdam on developing management training for professionals in cost reduction within the healthcare system.

And we want to make a difference because we are more than just a doctor or a pharmacist. As granddad Nguyen once said: “You can get a degree in anything but this doesn’t say anything about who you are as a person, nor about what type of person you are”. And as persons, we want to make a difference, because we believe everyone should be entitled to the most effective drug treatment when needed.

Call us idealistic. We are!

But we are also realistic: because everyone should be entitled to proper drug treatment. This is a perfectly feasible goal. It’s a path that will not be without its challenges and will certainly be strewn with obstacles, but nothing will stand in our way in achieving our goal. After all, no one chooses to be ill, but everybody should be able to opt for the best possible drug treatment. You would want that too, right?
