After our small company's upgrade to Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003, we are pleased to find that the combination finally has some decent Spam-stopping abilities. However, we have an existing server-level spam solution that most of us are used to. While the "global" filter of the existing solution works great and doesn't need any change, we would love to integrate the "user-level" filtering of the two solutions.

The existing solution uses Exchange folders for the user-level spam filtering--move a message to the "Whitelist" folder and the sender is always allowed through; move it to the "Blacklist" folder and the sender is always blocked. Outlook 2003, on the other hand, uses "Blocked Senders" and "Safe Senders" lists (in addition to its own spam filtering algorithms). One nice thing about these lists is that they are stored in each user's Exchange profile.

What I would like you to create is a simple plugin or service that would run on the Exchange server. This applet would regularly (though not more than once every hour or two) check each Exchange user's "Whitelist" and "Blacklist" folders and add the senders of any new messages to that user's "Safe Senders" and "Blocked Senders" lists.

At the same time, the service would would make sure that an message for each "Safe Sender" or "Blocked Sender" exists in the "Whitelist" or "Blacklist" folder; if the message does not exist, your program needs to create a new message object in the appropriate folder with the "From" header set to the address of the safe/blocked sender.

I would like to be able to provide the Exchange name and path of the Whitelist and Blacklist folders to your program (and change them if necessary). This can be done through registry entries or a plain-text config file; there does not need to be any administrative GUI for this project.

Once this project is complete, you will have the opportunity to bid in a private auction on additional features which are outside the scope of what I've described above.
