GD image resizing issue

We have an image gallery on a client website which needs to dynamically resize/crop images from a range of subfolders and then write them to an internal div and get them displayed "nicely" in a consistent arrangement. GD library and other permissions are in place on the server, we've tried ourselves but with little luck.

The pages needing accessed, project detail page, project category home page and project type home page, the URL will be released through the message system
