We are going to rent a Virtual Private Server (VPS) and seek someone who can setup and install a VPN Server (Open VPN, including a firewall, IP forwarding, PPTP Server, Certificate).
The reason for this is that our stuff members (small publishing company) can access the VPN Server through a client (Windows XP Notebook, username and password protected). They should use the save and encrypted tunnel to connect to the VPN Server. After they are connected save they can surf the web and they can log on to our CMS- Database. Same as they would use a public internet access point.
This way should make sure that no one between the client and the server is able to monitor the data stream e.g. any administrator of a public WLAN e.g. in a hotel/conference who would otherwise be able to log passwords and usernames we use.
The only traffic the admin of any WLAN can see is that there has been a connection established to the IP of the VPS-Server. He/she cannot see which websites had been surfed to or what kind of data has been sent or received except the encrypted stream - which is worthless.
It should only be possible to connect to the VPN-Server with the installed certificate, username and password on a WIN XP Notebook.
After connection the user will get a fix IP-address (IP address of the VPServer) to surf the web. Traffic between the VPN and the client should be tunneled (encrypted) and should not be able to decrypt by any third party.
Our provider offers the following Virtual Private Servers (VPS) with following OS:
Cent OS 4 or 5 (Default or minimal)
Debian 4.0 Minimal
Debian 4.0 Lamp
Fedora Core 7, 8 or 9 minimal
Gentoo 2008-08-07
Open Suse 10
Obuntu 7 or 8 minimal
or
Slackware 12
We will provide you with access to the VPS Server where you should also install a firewall so that no one else can highjack the VPS server.
