i am working on a similar project , where a backend java based program runs on the server and does the following : reads the email , checks it in the contact list of the user (reciever ), and /or updates DB automatically . then performs a virus check , and which will also have a spam filter and other useful artificial intelligent stuff that i have been looking at for past 6 months , the program is near completion . i get about 1000 junk mails every month , i know whats its like to have an organised email system . the other most inportant element will be backup of mails .... per user and restore as easy as one click both on the server and also in the indivisual's PC , depending on which ever is lost . the last thing i wanna look at is the mails are automatically scanned for viruses , there by warning you of potential threats .... i use a copy of panda , but i think i can make use of any program that you might be using . the key points are once again : organised email, on top of that spam filter , virus checking and backup .. Hi I notice you want this to run on both windows and unix/linux. So here is my advise... Use Perl because it has everything you need and it also will make modifying or adding features so much easier than using any other language! Also Perl is the best choice for dealing with text processing and finally (1) script will work on both system without any changes other than the mail function (send mail/smtp). If you want someone who will write it the way you want using the best coding methods and have it very system friendly then contact me!

This does not sound like a very difficult project technically but the issue will be performance and robustness. That means formal exhaustive testing. There are one or two practical issues but I'll send you a PM about that.
