How much would it cost? -------------------------------------- Changes in Safety There have been some improvements in school security since 2011. GIFS installed security cameras at the front and back of the school. Teachers and visitors are now required to wear ID badges to the school, but in practice this does not happen. Also, cameras were also set up in the school buses to monitor student behavior. Currently there are monitors available on the school buses travelling between Sacheon and Geoje to create better supervision on the 90 minute bus ride every morning and every afternoon. Finally, there is a procedure outlined in the emergency response plan for dealing with hostage or intruder situations as well as procedures for a school lockdown. In addition to general security, the school created an evacuation policy in 2013. The outline of this policy is in the staff handbook and the emergency response plan. The staff was briefed in August as part of the orientation week, before the start of the new school year. The school also has a first aid policy which is outlined in the emergency response plan on page 7. It states that in the event of an injury or serious illness, the administration or office staff member determines if the student requires first aid. If needed, they are to obtain assistance from someone in the school who knows first aid or CPR. In practice students are sent to the office. There is a sick room across from the Vice Principal’s office which has a bed for students to rest on. One member of the office staff received first aid training in Australia ten years ago but the certification has likely expired. Staff received CPR training from the Sacheon Fire Department as part of their professional development on April 17th, 2015. The kitchen is also safe and clean. A professional cafeteria staff operates at the school. They work for an externally contracted catering company who also serve GIFS’s sister school in Busan (BFS). The cafeteria also meets health and hygiene standards. The cafeteria has at least two inspections a year; one internally and the other through a Sacheon educational department of health and safety. There have been major investments in the science lab in 2014-15 and this will continue in 2015-16 with the purchase of additional chemicals and Vernier equipment. Safety has also improved over the last few years. There is also a policy and an emergency plan in place for dealing with potential chemical emergencies in the lab. This is outlined in the Emergency Response Plan. In addition, there are a number of areas which were outlined in the IB safety standards, flagged up by GIF’s IB consultant in 2014, but have subsequently been met. During the IB authorization visit in early 2015 the lab was once again inspected and met all requirements. In 2014-15 GIFS hired a full-time Chemistry teacher in response to parental requests for IGCSE and IB Chemistry. Finally, the building is safe. It was completed in 2004 so it is relatively new. The school regularly conducts fire drills, has a fire inspection once a year as well as regular electrical inspections by external regulatory bodies. However, there are a number of areas that still need to be addressed. To begin with, although the playground is in general safe and adequate, the walls are too high and there are loose rocks in the sand pit area which are often kicked onto the field. It would probably be a good idea to have a fence around the basketball court. Students are also able to go behind certain parts of the campus where it is difficult to keep an eye on them. The back door of the school is always open which means that students can easily leave without being watched (although this has never happened). Cameras are in the office but as mentioned before, students have left the school grounds without being noticed by office staff. The front and back gates are usually not locked and when they are they are easy to open for both staff and students. Furthermore, there is a gap between the fence and the gate is big enough for an intruder to get through. The administration has made a request to make improvements in the above areas. In addition to the playground, student health information for teachers has not been provided after registration. The information should be made available. Teachers are not aware of student health concerns when they register for the school. However, health information is currently being kept in student files. The school does have a medication policy. All medication goes to the office where it is to be administered under supervision.
