Motion Capture Setup and Retargeting Maya

SUMMARY OF WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE: Basically you just need to do a render or playblast of some motion capture retargeted to a character in Maya, the animation doesn’t need to be long I’ve suggested 5-30seconds and it can be rendered just from a single fixed camera view. Please choose a FREE MAYA RIG from- [login to view URL] Apply a short Motion Capture clip to a character rig of your own choosing utilizing Maya’s animation tools to re-target the Mo-Cap effectively. This assignment will focus on two main areas: 1. Effective character rigging and setup using the HumanIK system in Maya. Work with character asset setup with the HumanIK system, paying attention to technical considerations including mesh topology, skin binding and control rig setup to create a character rig which is production ready for animation. Example model assets will be provided for this part of the assignment though students are also encouraged to create their own character models and textures for this and Assignment 2. 2. Effective re-targeting of Motion Capture data to the character rig. Utilizing the technical tools and processes in Maya, student’s will re-target mo-cap data from a capture skeleton to their own character asset (which has been setup in part.1, see above). Effective use of the key clean-up tools in Maya to refine and polish the motion capture data should be utilized alongside animation layering to edit the animation to best fit the character that has been chosen for this assignment. Finalised animations for this first assignment should be no shorter than 4-5 seconds and no longer than around 30 seconds. Assignment 2 will provide further opportunities to expand on the work created in Assignment 1.
