I need a function for Delphi ODBC Express (which will work in Delphi 4). It needs to be able to identify whether a specific field is a String, Integer, Real ... etc. It must work with ANY odbc database (within reason!). I know I can use DataTypeName to get the database name for the field, but that does not help as each database has different names for datatypes, again I need to know whether it is a string, integer etc. And it must work even if the table is empty. I tried using: [login to view URL][i].DataType And created Access and SQL Server databases with every field type and wrote down the DataType values for each - but it seems that every database gives different values. I'm sure there must be some way to decode it ... [login to view URL] sounds promising, but I couldn't figure out how to use it! BTW, the function should not write anything to the database.
