Hello, Happy new year! I'm the mechanical design engineer with 3.5 years experience in automotive industry. I can use UG NX to export the .IGS file to .stl file so you can import it into Sketchup. Then after saving, your imported file will become .skp file. I'm using a HP Z420 work station with CPU Xeon E5 3.8MHz, 32Gb Ram, 256Gb SSD. I've been using it to open the 3D models which is more than 500Mb in size in less than 5 min. I don't know how heavy of your model, but to reduce the size, I have 2 proposals, delete unnessary details or scale down the models. If you want to make the drawing from your scaled down models but keep the current dimensions, you can simply file adjust the scale on your sketchup drawings. If the files are not too large, you can try the original models to see if your computer can use it or not. There is no problem checking the power of our computer right? I am an Industrial designer, and often I need bridges between my programs as you can see in my bio to work on a file in different programs as in your case. I prefer SolidWorks to SketchUp when it comes from *.IGES to *.SKP. This is an easy task and will do it in a couple of hours depends on the count of the files... about 25 converted files an hours is the speed i can do this.
