It does sound like an ownership problem but it could also be a permissions problem. There are methods of moving files around in bulk on UNIX systems that preserve the original file (and directory if necessary) permissions and ownership. Restoring the original ownership might be difficult since we'd need to know which UNIX users own which files, if these file attributes have been overwritten. On the other hand, it might not. It depends on which solution is acceptable. I have over 10 years of experience in UNIX, Solaris specifically. And even more experience using Linux. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Adjusting the permissions for this file should not require more than 15 minutes to complete. It simply seems the permissions were not moved with the file, It inhereted the permissions from the parent folder.
