Project 52 - Background & Context Background Global cities are increasingly facing a number of sustainability and resilience issues. To address these issues, many cities have begun implementing strategies to address challenges to urban resilience and improve the social, environmental and economic health of their communities. Some solutions are short-term and intended to be revisited regularly, while others aim to solve the problem entirely with a single intervention. Other solutions may be focused over mid- or long-term vision and action periods. Sydney has published Resilient Sydney – A strategy for city resilience 2018 (Links to an external site.) (Links to an external site.) providing a vision for a connected, inclusive and resilient metropolis. It presents a 5-year plan with 5 directions and associated flagship, supporting and aligned actions (35 actions in total). You will select one of the five Directions (Direction 1 is chosen) to focus on for your research project with the aim of helping Greater Sydney address an urban sustainability/resilience challenge. You will prepare 20 power point slides to share the action plans. A 6 minute speech for the slides is to be written as well Please note: A surface-level analysis of your issue and case studies is not sufficient. You must consider the Direction and how it impacts Sydney in depth. 'Direction 1' to focus on. Research on your chosen 'Direction' (DIRECTION 1) and its impact on Greater Sydney. Identify the global urban sustainability/resilience challenge associated with the Direction and how it is impacting global cities. Finalised the research focus and research question/project. Identifiey two (2) case studies which you will research for ideas that could be applied in Sydney. Complete the review of two (2) illustrative case studies and outline how they address the research question/project idea and identify key lessons that can be implemented in Greater Sydney; Utilising the lessons learned from both case studies to develop and deliver a proposed plan of action for Sydney. For example, if you choose Direction 3: ‘Connect for Strength’, your proposed project/case studies will need to address the challenge of ‘social cohesion’ and your finding from the case studies and the developed plan of action should be focussed on ‘people having equal access to engage in society, the economy and all the city has to offer’. You may investigate measures taken in other cities within the Rockefeller 100 RC program - or any international city - to address similar or identical issues. Your proposed project/case study may be at a policy level, or at a physical community space, precinct or city scale; the choice is yours. You may select relevant international best practice case studies to demonstrate why it is useful to solve the issue(s) in the Direction chosen. Depending on whether you are working at a policy level or investigating physical interventions at the city, precinct, or community scale, you may need to identify a Sydney site/building etc for your proposed project/case study. For example, if you are looking at Direction 4 ‘Get ready’ you might focus on mapping vulnerabilities in an LGA and communicating this to residents. Your case study should study strategies implemented in another city that could help facilitate this process successfully locally. Your plan of action should contain actions and recommendations that build upon the analysis of solutions implemented in your individual case studies, pulled together into a cohesive plan for Sydney.
